The Opening Divergence and Lap 13 Lead Change

As documented in the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia report, the race staged at the Sepang International Circuit on 4 October 2026 hinged on pivotal operational decisions made across changing track conditions following a 93-minute pre-race delay. A rain delay of 40 minutes was extended by another 53 minutes when multiple cars encountered low-speed throttle mapping malfunctions during the formation attempt. When the race got underway, the 22-car field split at the start, with nine drivers on intermediate tyres and 13 on slicks. While intermediate starters Kimi Antonelli and George Russell initially swept into a Mercedes one-two ahead of pole-sitter Max Verstappen, the damp track rapidly dried.

The race turned when Valtteri Bottas spun into the Turn 13 gravel on Lap 9, triggering a full Safety Car. This neutralization allowed the intermediate runners to pit with reduced time loss compared to green-flag conditions. Tyre compound selection at this stop proved decisive: Mercedes fitted medium tyres to Antonelli's car, whereas Red Bull chose softs for Verstappen. On the Lap 13 restart, the immediate grip advantage of the soft compound allowed Verstappen to overtake Antonelli around the outside of Turn 1, securing a lead he maintained to take the first Formula 1 victory for Red Bull Ford.

Late Neutralizations and the Battle Behind

A second decisive strategic sequence occurred deeper in the field. Lewis Hamilton had dropped to 17th on the opening lap after starting on soft slicks. Instead of switching strategies early, Ferrari kept Hamilton on his starting tyres for an extended 29-lap stint while other competitors conducted second stops. When Alexander Albon suffered a gearbox failure on Lap 41, Race Control deployed a Virtual Safety Car that was upgraded to a full Safety Car on Lap 42. Pitting under this neutralization minimized Hamilton's pit delta, enabling him to pass Isack Hadjar after the Lap 45 restart and secure third place, 4.919 seconds behind Verstappen.

The race conclusion also produced a major shift in the Drivers' Championship standings. Russell was running in podium contention until his Mercedes stopped on the main straight on Lap 49. Because Russell completed 49 of the 55 scheduled laps, he met the 90 percent threshold under FIA sporting regulations and was classified 20th. Antonelli's 18 points for second place, paired with Russell's non-scoring classified finish, extended Antonelli's championship advantage over his teammate to 84 points.
