Off-Track Violations and Rejoining Standards
Maintaining proper positioning on the circuit is vital during every Grand Prix session. When a competitor runs wide or off the circuit, officials examine whether an advantage was gained or if the layout was short-cut. Under MotoGP track limits rules, any rider leaving the circuit accidentally must re-enter either at an official designated point or in a manner that yields no positional or time benefit. Should an unfair advantage occur, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel holds the authority to issue in-race sanctions or cancel the relevant lap.
Dashboard Alerts and Compliance Windows
Once stewards determine that a penalty is warranted, the notification is dispatched immediately to the rider via dashboard instrumentation and relayed to the team on official timing and broadcast screens. Pit boards may also be used to confirm the decision. The formal window to serve the disciplinary sanction begins the first time the rider crosses the finish line following the dashboard transmission. Ignoring this instruction within the designated lap window prompts an escalation to harsher operational penalties.
Finality of In-Race Officiating
Stewards have the discretion to substitute an ordinary time penalty when circumstances demand, separate from the harsher penalties handed out for deliberately disregarding instructions. Critically, decisions concerning boundary infringements are treated under FIM regulations as matters of fact judged by on-site officials. Because these rulings represent factual determinations, they cannot be protested or appealed to the FIM Appeal Stewards, the Court of Arbitration, or external civil courts, making the stewards' on-track judgment definitive.
