The Setup and the Lap 20 Overtake
In the 51-lap Azerbaijan Grand Prix held on 15 September 2024, Charles Leclerc converted pole position into an early race lead. Oscar Piastri, running in second place, initiated the front-running pit stops by pitting on lap 15, while Leclerc followed one lap later on lap 16. FIA records register their pit-lane stationary durations at 20.181 seconds for Piastri and 20.671 seconds for Leclerc. While that half-second stationary difference does not encompass the overall net time gained or lost across in-laps and out-laps, it helped keep Piastri within striking range once both returned to the track.
Leclerc maintained position immediately following the stops, meaning the lead change did not occur in the pit lane. Instead, Piastri used DRS on the main straight at the start of lap 20 to overtake Leclerc into Turn 1. That wheel-to-wheel pass secured track position, allowing Piastri to lead the final 32 laps under persistent pressure from the Ferrari.
Understanding the Final Finishing Interval
Official timing lists Piastri taking the checkered flag in 1:32:58.007, beating Leclerc by a classified winning margin of 10.910 seconds. That double-digit spread does not illustrate how closely matched the two cars ran during the majority of their stint. Official classification gaps aggregate the entire contest, including the late laps where the gap widened, rather than indicating the nose-to-tail intervals sustained during their mid-race dispute.
A late incident also altered the podium classification behind them. A collision between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz on the penultimate lap removed both cars from contention, elevating George Russell to third place, 31.328 seconds behind the winner. Ultimately, while timing sheets cannot isolate aerodynamic performance or tyre wear rates, the decisive factor in the Oscar Piastri 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix win was combining the strategic undercut attempt with an on-track move into Turn 1 and 32 laps of subsequent defence.
